At the recent Formnext 2024 edition, LORTEK showcased its advanced capabilities in metallic additive manufacturing, presenting innovative solutions for demanding materials, processes, and applications in PBF-LB and DED technologies.
In PBF-LB (Powder Bed Fusion-Laser Beam), LORTEK highlighted advancements in real-time monitoring, FEM simulations for distortion prediction, and new developments in materials with customised properties. Other innovations included closed-loop control systems, support optimisation, and digital twins to ensure quality, repeatability, and efficiency in complex designs.
In DED (Directed Energy Deposition), using both arc and laser, LORTEK demonstrated solutions for automated repair, hybrid manufacturing, and advanced material processing, including copper and titanium. Noteworthy advancements included hybrid robotic cells, portable systems, and digital twins for real-time quality control and prediction. These innovations reinforce the centre's leadership in metallic additive manufacturing across sectors such as aerospace and energy storage.
LORTEK also highlighted its innovative FSAM (Friction Stir Additive Manufacturing) technology. This solid-state deposition process, performed in an open atmosphere, is ideal for processing materials with poor weldability. It features low heat input, no solidification defects, and high energy efficiency.
In terms of facilities for developing technological solutions for our clients, CIRCLE, a new multi-robot cell, stood out. It integrates high-deposition-rate DED technologies, including laser wire and dual-wire arc, to create a hybrid concept for repairing and manufacturing large, high-value-added components.
