The R&D activities are organised around two main pillars. The first focuses on quantum-secure communications, developing systems capable of transmitting information with extremely high levels of security. The project will work with both established technologies, such as Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), and emerging approaches currently under research, such as Quantum Conference Key Agreement (QCKA), testing them across different network architectures and integrating them with current cybersecurity technologies.
The second pillar focuses on quantum sensing and navigation. Research will be carried out on advanced sensors designed to improve positioning and navigation without relying on GPS, including more sensitive radar systems, magnetic field detection technologies, and highly accurate inertial navigation systems. The objective is to evaluate their performance under demanding conditions and in environments where Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) are unavailable or unreliable.
The consortium is coordinated by ITECAM. Together with i2CAT and FIDESOL, it will dedicate part of its efforts to ultra-secure quantum communication networks and post-quantum cryptography. Meanwhile, GRADIANT and LORTEK will conduct research on quantum sensors, with particular emphasis on nitrogen-vacancy (NV) diamond magnetometers and Rydberg atom-based radio-frequency sensors.
QUIXOTE represents a significant step forward in the development and deployment of quantum technologies, enabling the exploration of new solutions and the definition of the conditions required for their implementation in real-world environments. The network will focus its research on applications in the industrial, security, and societal domains, promoting the transfer of these technologies from the laboratory to practical systems and services.
The project will also strengthen the research capabilities of the participating technology centres by promoting the training of specialised researchers while fostering gender equality and greater female participation in science and technology.
