Recovering critical and strategic raw materials from waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) requires new technological solutions capable of automating different stages of the process. In this context, LORTEK is participating in CIRCUIT4EU, a European project focused on developing solutions for the recovery and reuse of these resources.
One of the areas addressed by the project is the automated disassembly of electronic components. CIRCUIT4EU focuses on recovering resources from printed circuit boards (PCBs), permanent magnets and other electronic components found in products such as laptops, Wi-Fi devices, e-scooters and dishwashers.
A robotic solution for component desoldering
As part of the project, LORTEK will lead the development of a robotic end-effector for desoldering components from printed circuit boards (PCBs).
This solution is part of the range of technologies being developed within CIRCUIT4EU to advance the automation of electronic component disassembly and recovery. The project also combines robotic disassembly, component desoldering, hydrometallurgical recycling, Digital Product Passports and artificial intelligence-based inspection.
Technology applied to resource recovery
CIRCUIT4EU aims to develop solutions close to industrial application to improve the recovery of critical and strategic raw materials from electronic waste.
The project is coordinated by ENSAM (Arts et Métiers), brings together 21 entities from 9 countries and has an approximate budget of €8.9 million. With a duration of 42 months, it will run until November 2029 under the Horizon Europe programme.
LORTEK’s participation focuses on developing the robotic solution for desoldering components from PCBs, as part of the project’s activities aimed at the automation and recovery of resources from electronic waste.
