Methodology for definition of parameters for new materials

At LORTEK, we actively seek to reduce consumption of resources, i.e.: time, consumables or manufacturing materials. Within the latter, new materials require dedication to be successfully manufactured by our additive technologies due to the large number of customisable parameters in our processes, and therefore, we follow our in-house methodology based on the previous experience of the AM technologies group and on high impact studies carried out by other researchers related to the identification of the most relevant parameters for each specific study case.

Once the most relevant parameters for the desired functionality are identified, manufacturing series are planned and executed following experiment design methodologies, analysing results and generating a large amount of information of interest on the manufacturability of the material, allowing future variation predictions and obtaining an optimised working window for the material requirements. This optimised window is verified by a series of subsequent manufacturing runs which corroborate the identified parameter ranges.

Target/Challenge

Obtaining a working window that ensures the expected quality of manufactured products while being sustainable in terms of time, energy and materials used.

Result

Significant machine working time reduction in metal additive manufacturing processes, as well as consumption of materials used in preparation and optimisation activities, ensuring stable processes and applications of the highest quality.
