ecoTECH, which belongs to the eco-design activities within Airframe ITD of Clean Sky2, is developing a set of innovative technologies to mitigate the environmental footprint of aircraft production from a global life-cycle point of view. This involves the development of new materials, processes, methods and recycling technologies that will lead to green manufacturing, maintenance and end-of life benefits. All these key enabling technologies will be utilized to manufacture four demonstrators (thermoplastic, thermoset, metallic and biomaterial) to verify novel materials, technologies and processes. These innovations aims to lower the environmental burden of the non-operational aspects of aircraft production and life-cycle management, thereby lowering CO2 and NOx emissions and reducing waste.

LORTEK is developing a new welding route for low-weldable high-strength aluminium alloys based on solid-state techniques. Friction Stir Welding (FSW), which is a technique that consumes less energy than other alternative welding techniques and has no fumes nor UV emissions, has been optimized to obtain a robust process that provides a stable and repetitive technology for high quality welding. LORTEK has contributed to the metallic demonstrator which is represented by a section of the upper center fuselage, by joining the stringers to the frame in a curved panel.
